It's Winter ... Get a Grip!

If your Hyundai is equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), then you have a better grip on the road. What is ESC? ESC uses sophisticated sensors to determine the driver’s intended path while turning. If the vehicle is not responding to the driver’s intentions, the ESC will selectively brake individual wheels and control the engine power to help return the vehicle to the intended path. In more simple terms, ESC is designed to stabilize your car during turning maneuvers.

This system is a great safety feature but keep in mind it does not replace safe driving practices. ESC is automatically on every time you start your car and remains on unless you turn it off. When you turn off the ESC system, the “ESC-OFF” indicator light will stay on.

This brings up the next question, why would I turn off my ESC? ESC should be turned off in a situation where you require consistent traction from all the drive wheels on the vehicle. An example of this may be where the car is stuck in snow and consistent or equal power from all wheels is necessary. Under normal driving conditions, there is no reason to turn the ESC off.

Now that you know that you have a grip, it is important to remember that ESC and ABS (Anti Lock Braking) are important safety features but do not replace good driving habits. Stay safe and we will take a look at Anti-lock Brakes in the near future.
